About
I was born and raised in Qingdao, China. In 2017 I came to the UK as an international student. After studying a Creative Media course in Bournemouth and Poole College, I realised that my true passion lied in making moving image works in a fine art context. I enrolled in the BA Fine Art course in University of Westminster, London, and I am due to study a specialised moving image course for my MA in the Royal College of Art this year.
An array of subjects, including virtuality, nature, failure, fantasy and politics, converge in my films in quirky ways. I work with a variety of materials in often episodic ways to construct uncanny narratives and atmosphere, creating journeys within the contemporary cultural landscape. Some characters and elements include the Runaway Wuhan Pig, the Anonymous Mountain and the slumps into meltdown and abstraction. I use this amalgam to reflect our postmodern fragmented perception / experience of life, and also to simulate the alienation and detachment one experiences both in digital life and (what we clumsily define as) real life.
My work is also informed by my experience as a Gen-Z kid growing up in China in the 2000s. I often encountered incongruity around me, eg. the supposedly communist ideology v. the rampant capitalist reality; the hyper-nationalist regime that dictates devotion to the country v. the effect of capitalism making one inherently selfish and narcissistic. I often try to recreate these bizarreness in my works.
